Upper School students (9th, 10th, 11th grades) enjoyed mid-week visits to either Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit or Lighthouse in Pontiac where they assisted with packing boxes or helped clean apartments in preparation for new tenants.
Each year, Gleaners distributes millions of pounds of food through a network of partner pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior centers and other agencies that directly feed hungry people, while Lighthouse in Pontiac provides housing assistance and supportive services to families looking to rebuild or start anew.
Engaging in volunteer service initiatives help Eton students develop civic and social responsibility skills while empowering them to make a difference in the community.
The start of the new school year brings with it a change in leadership for the middle school. Meet Jamila Steward—she's a ball of energy bursting with ideas with 23 years of experience. She brings with her a background in student growth and development. Jamila is committed to child-centered education, where innovation and 21st-century skills are taught and exercised.
As an educator and a psychotherapist, Jamila understands students' social and emotional well-being is essential, especially during these times. She's a hands-on leader who looks forward to being fully integrated into the classrooms and happenings of our middle school community.
